Starr, Nardo and their eight children first arrived in Charlotte in February after escaping homelessness. Over the three months that we have known this family, we have been blown away by their resourcefulness and determination. The parents have overcome countless obstacles and are now both working. The mom walks home two miles late at night from the only bus stop that runs anywhere near the hotel. The dad meets her there so she doesn’t have to walk home alone. The kids have made their parents proud by keeping up with their online school work despite being cooped up together in two hotel rooms all this time. The family participates in all of our educational workshops and communicates with us daily to share small victories and express appreciation. They are thrilled to be moving into their own rental home this week! They need a stackable washer and dryer to do the many loads of laundry that a family of 10 generates.
